Petzl Myo 5 Headlamp Hunting Gear Misc

Hunting Gear Misc Manufacturer: Petzl
Petzl Model: Myo 5 Headlamp
Review Category: Hunting Gear Misc

Purchase: Hunting Gear Misc Purchased this headlamb at EMS on sale for $45 with an EMS gift card.

Things I like about the Petzl Myo 5 Headlamp Hunting Gear Misc: As with most headlamps, I like how it leaves my hands free and that the light is always directed to where I look. Apart from that obvious fact, this headlamp puts out a good, strong amount of light. The 5 LEDs give a nice, soft, bluish light that reaches out fairly well. The headlamp also features a 6V Xenon halogen bulb which throws a beam about 100m when that mode is selected and which is adjustable from flood to spot.

What I don't like about the Petzl Myo 5 Headlamp: The headlamp is powered by 4 AA batteries which reside in a battery case attached to the headband. It is not uncomfortable or unduly heavy, but it is noticeable. Using the halogen bulb devours batteries. Max operating time with the halogen is 4 hours. Even though the halogen light has a good reach, the light cast is yellow and shadows are pronounced. The LEDs for ninety percent or more of the time is what will be used. The supplied literature advises not to get the battery pack wet. Seems like a pretty unreasonable expectation in an outdoor piece of gear.

Hunting Gear Misc Myo 5 Headlamp quality: The lamp seems to be well constructed. The lamb is adjustable in attitude, up or down, with a 'lock' position so the lamp doesn't get inadvertently turned on when in one's pack. Depending how many times you twist the bezel on or how far you twist it, determines the intensity or type of light you will use (LED or Halogen.) As noted above, the battery pack resides on the headband, at the very rear. From the battery pack runs a phone cord-like power cord that connects to the head lamp. The headband is adjustable. Likewise, and additional band that rides over and on top of the head is adjustable.

Myo 5 Headlamp summary: This lamp does what it is designed to do, gives one hands-free light with adjustability in intensity and type of light. It's not uncomfortable although noticeable enough. The fact that the manufacturer advises avoiding getting the battery pack, which of course, is sitting at the back of one's head, sort of limits it use wet weather. However, I have used it in the rain with no problems....yet.
