Traditions Pursuit LT Black Powder
Black Powder Manufacturer: Traditions
Traditions Model: Pursuit LT
Review Category: Black Powder
Purchase: Black Powder I bought the gun directly at the Traditions factory store in Old Saybrook, CT for $199. I liked the feel of the gun and the ease of use and cleaning.
Things I like about the Traditions Pursuit LT Black Powder: The gun handles well. Shoots very accurately with two 50 grain Triple Seven pellets (100 grain total) and a 300 Grain Hornady hollow point. I hunted one day in POURING rain and sleet. The 209 primer is totally enclosed in the beak open action and was none the worse for the rain. Cleaning is very easy. Simply remove the breach plug and go at it.
What I don't like about the Traditions Pursuit LT: The ram rod supplied with the gun is too short. It works OK in the field but is WAY too short to effectively use at the range. The folks at Traditions explained that this is a "draw back" of the break open action design. I bought a "T-handle" extension which broke after about three range cleanings. I bought the last one in the store and learned that the handles won't be available until next year. Scope mounting was a minor nightmare. The drilled holes are so closely spaced that I was unable to use normal Weaver rings and had to buy a set of "extended" rings. When I spoke with the Traditions staff, it was explained that a longer, one piece base is in the works and should be available soon and will alleviate this problem. Traditions does have a scope set which works very well on the gun and is available for around $65. My friend got one with his Pursuit and has been very happy with it.
Black Powder Pursuit LT quality: Overall, the gun appears to be extremely rugged and well made, as well as being simple to use and clean. Everything is solid and the trigger pull is quite crisp and clean. Other than the minor issues above, I have no complaints. In addition, I've found that the personnel at Traditions (I'm fortunate to live close by) go out of their way to be helpful.
Pursuit LT summary: My best hunting buddy bought one after seeing mine and having me recommend the Pursuit LT. The problems I noted are really minor and are easily addressed. Especially for the price, this is a tough hunting weapon to beat.
