Things I like about the Austin & Halleck 420 LR >50 Cal Black Powder: Superior performance right out of the box. After mouting the scope and quickly bore sighting, my first two shots at 25 yards were in the same hole! I continued to make scope adjustments at the same distance prior to heading to the 100 yard range. My last three shots also cut the same hole. Very low recoil at 100 grains of 777 and 260 grain sabot. Love it.
What I don't like about the Austin & Halleck 420 LR >50 Cal: I have to nit-pick to come up with anything. After my first shooting session I could not get the breech plug out to clean the barrel. After almost an hour of pouring solvent into the barrel and working the plug back and forth it finally let go. Seems there was no lubricant on the threads. I added some and worked the plug in and out a few times and it is fine.
Black Powder 420 LR >50 Cal quality: First rate throughout. I looked at all of the heavily advertised models on the sporting good store racks and just wasn't impressed. I prefer to buy heirloom quality firearms vs. production models. After reading several articles on Austim & Halleck, and seeing them at a gun show I took the plunge. Not the least bit disappointed. The price does not do justice to the rifle.
420 LR >50 Cal summary: If you are looking for a quality crafted muzzleloader that truly performs, this is the one for you. I own three others that will stay in the cabinet from here on out. ( The extra synthetic stock that comes with the price is a plus if you intend do do some "rough country" hunting.)
