Simmons Whitetail Expedition 4x12x42 w/AO Rifle Scopes
Rifle Scopes Manufacturer: Simmons
Simmons Model: Whitetail Expedition 4x12x42 w/AO
Review Category: Rifle Scopes
Purchase: Rifle Scopes I bought two of these scopes from Midway USA online for $114.95 each plus $6.90 S/H. My reasons for buying two were based on a comparison between this top of the line model Simmons and the bottom of the line Leupold Rifleman 3x9x40 I had purchased and subsequently returned.
Things I like about the Simmons Whitetail Expedition 4x12x42 w/AO Rifle Scopes: The Simmons Whitetail Expedition with the Aspherical Lens technology was superior in every rifle scope category when compared to the Leupold Rifleman 3x9x40. I found this unsettling because I am a Union Pilot and I wanted to 'Buy American' and my Leupold ended up going back due to inferior workmanship and quality controls. The optical clarity on the Simmons was as good as a Nikon Buckmaster, if not better. The Adjustable Objective really made focusing at ranges from 25yds to 500yds easy. The adjustable diopter was smooth and crisp. Sharp readability of 3" letters at 200 yards. The ZOOM selection ring was very smooth to adjust and maintained the focus at all power levels. I did not experience any parallax at any range. My windage and elevation positive finger adjustments were accurate and consistent at the 25yd through 200yd targets shooting 150gr 30-06 and 55gr .223 Soft Points. Low light/Sunset and Sunrise clarity was superior to anything I have ever owned to date(I have not owned a Leupold VariX III or any Zeiss/Burris/Pentax/Nikon).
What I don't like about the Simmons Whitetail Expedition 4x12x42 w/AO: I don't like the fact that American companies can't build a rifle scope of this caliber at this price right here in America. This scope was made in the Phillipines and I commend the folks who made such a good product.
Rifle Scopes Whitetail Expedition 4x12x42 w/AO quality: Superior to all scopes made in China (BSA, etc.) and superior to the Leupold Rifleman I compared it to. Rugged one piece aluminum 1" tube and obvious quality controls in the scope. I would not, however, buy the bottom of the line scope from Simmons. I also will never again buy a bottom of the line Leupold. I looked at the Leupold VariX II and I was impressed as it appears to match the Simmons Expedition AE with the exception of the Adjustable Objective lens.
Whitetail Expedition 4x12x42 w/AO summary: I am grateful I caught two of these on sale at Midway USA. I checked their website last night and they had pushed the price back up to $179.95. I have my scope mounted on my Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06 and my son's scope on his H&R .223 bull barrel single shot. Both weapons are literally proving to be 'Set em and forget em' scopes. They hold their zero and even came with 'Scope Coats' and lens caps in the box. Limited Lifetime Warranty.
