Shimano PMS 66 MC medium action rod Bass Fishing Rods

Bass Fishing Rods Manufacturer: Shimano
Shimano Model: PMS 66 MC medium action rod
Review Category: Bass Fishing Rods

Purchase: Bass Fishing Rods I needed another spinning rod/reel combo so that I could set up multiple rods for catfish. However, I wanted to be sure to get something that could be an alternate bass fishing rig as well, and this setup fit the bill (and was too good a deal to pass up). In the interest of brevity I'll review the reel in another review (Sienna 4000 FA) but keep in mind that I got both the rod and reel on sale for about $40 at the Sports Authority. I was just in the Sports Authority yesterday, and they have some excellent deals on Shimano combos again right now.

Things I like about the Shimano PMS 66 MC medium action rod Bass Fishing Rods: I like the action of this rod very much. It is a medium action graphite rod, and is what most people would expect as far as that goes. It is stiff enough that accurate casting is easy (not too much flexing, for the most part the lure goes where you point the rod), but still sensitive enough to let you feel a medium sized fish enought to fight it properly. Setting the hook quickly is no problem. If you are catfishing and have the rod in a holder, the action of a nibbling fish is fairly visible in the rod tip, even in low light. The guides are pretty slick, which is pretty standard nowadays, and the rod has a nice cork handle as well.

What I don't like about the Shimano PMS 66 MC medium action rod: The thing I dislike the most about this rod is that it's a one piece. For my money a sectional rod doesn't have an appreciably different action, and will fit in a car or Jeep with no hassle. At 6'6" that's not true with this rod. Obviously this same issue could arise in a boat or on a canoe trip. I'll often do a fair amount of walking to get to a fishing spot, and guesss which piece of equipment is consistently the biggest problem getting through the brush (especially if I am moving from spot to spot and have left it rigged!). The hardware that holds the reel to the rod is plastic. I have had not problems with this so far, but would prefer it to be made of metal. This may sound kind of silly, but I like having fishing tackle look "real" and durable, even if the durability isn't affected that much. Come on, Shimano!

Bass Fishing Rods PMS 66 MC medium action rod quality: Good apart from the plastic hardware.

PMS 66 MC medium action rod summary: The rod is great, but the casting and hook setting power you get comes with a slight trade-off. I would say the action is more on the medium-heavy than the medium-light side of things, and it's not the best for panfish or pther small fish fishing. On the plus side, it can handle good sized fish (certainly any bass) easily. As I've already mentioned the one-piece aspect can be inconvenient, but other than that and the plastic hardware the rod gets a strong "A."
