Purchase: Unit was acquired from Cabelas for 349.99. I acquireed the unit because I was looking for a replacement to my magellan Sportrak Topo.
Things I like about the Magellan Explorist 600: The unit is lightweight, compact and easy to carry in your pocket. It has a rechargeable battery and upgradeable memory. Unit is fully waterproof and shock resitant which is great for the nasty weather that always seems to come with hunting. In my year in using the unit I have never had a situation where I have lost my signal in the field even in dark timber or bad weather. The backlit color screen is very easy to see in any light condition.
What I don't like about the Magellan Explorist 600: The icons on the buttons wore off from being in my pocket within the first month of use. The rechargeable battery is great for reducing cost but can not be replaced by conventional AAAs or AAs like other units.
Explorist 600 quality: Unit is constructed very soundly with seals and gaskets to keep water from pentrating. I spend over 20 consecutive days in the field last bow season with this unit and never had a problem. The unit endured rain, snow and freezing temperature but continued to operate.
Explorist 600 summary: Overall this is a good GPS for the money. The unit like most other GPS units is not very useful out in the field without the purchase of the additional topo software. The icons on the unit wear off easily but after two days of use you don't need to know what was on them. The unit is very easy to use compared to other units. The insturction manual was well written and became very useful when learning how to load addition map information from the additional SD memory card slot. Overall good GPS could use a little work on the buttons and battery portion.
