Traditions Lightning Bolt .45 caliber Black Powder Black Powder
Black Powder Manufacturer: Traditions
Traditions Model: Lightning Bolt .45 caliber Black Powder
Review Category: Black Powder
Purchase: Black Powder Purchased from Bass Pro for $99. I wanted a .45 caliber Black Powder gun because of the ballistics. Being a novice gunsmith I figured I could embellish the unit without spending a bunch.
Things I like about the Traditions Lightning Bolt .45 caliber Black Powder Black Powder: I like the appearance and simplicity of the unit. I also like the synthetic stock and nickel barrel. I shoot a Rem. 700 center fire rifle and this unit is very similar in design.
What I don't like about the Traditions Lightning Bolt .45 caliber Black Powder: The unit had a heavy trigger but with some minor polishing etc. it is much smoother now. I also had some hang fires but the people at Traditions advised to back the adjustable firing pin out a touch to further engage the 209 primer. I also found that the Remington brand primers were a little thinner on the headrim and allowed good contact from firing pin. It is absolutely a must to keep this type of gun clean, especially the firing mechanism.
Black Powder Lightning Bolt .45 caliber Black Powder quality: The construction of the unit is good. Like many production guns the milling can be a bit rough but can be smoothed down with emory cloth etc. It makes everything operate smoothly and properly.
Lightning Bolt .45 caliber Black Powder summary: If your going to buy cheaper, be prepared to do a little hobby work. It's not rocket science and will give you a feeling of accomplishment to tweek the problem areas. My unit is now a tack driver out to 150 yards plus and I have taken several deer with it. It is topped with a Leupold 3 X 9, charged with 777 loose powder and Powerbelt bullets. I really enjoy shooting it.
