CVA Optima Pro .50 Cal. Muzzleloader Black Powder
Black Powder Manufacturer: CVA
CVA Model: Optima Pro .50 Cal. Muzzleloader
Review Category: Black Powder
Purchase: Black Powder I bought the CVA Optima Pro for $279 at Gander Mountain to use for deer hunting.
Things I like about the CVA Optima Pro .50 Cal. Muzzleloader Black Powder: The accuracy of the Optima Pro is excellent with a 2" group at 100 yards from a solid rest. After sighting it in, I was anxious to harvest a deer and managed to harvest and mature doe at 110 yards with 150 grain of Triple 7 using 250 Gr. CVA Sabots. My son was in the blind, when the gun went off he said "nice shot it's down". The blind provides a relatively solid rest. Cleaning is very easy, the breech plug come in and out with ease.
What I don't like about the CVA Optima Pro .50 Cal. Muzzleloader: The trigger pull is terrible, from a solid bench rest the accuracy is very good but in hunting situations the heavy trigger pull effects accuracy and is a big factor in its overall performance. It doesn't seem like a big thing for some people but I would not purchase another unless CVA improves it or I can have a gunsmith make the necessary changes for a reasonable cost.
Black Powder Optima Pro .50 Cal. Muzzleloader quality: Overall quality is very good and has performed well so far. We'll see how it performs during the cold late season muzzleloader hunt in Michigan's UP this year.
Optima Pro .50 Cal. Muzzleloader summary: In comparison to the other in-line muzzleloader the Optime Pro is priced so the average working hunter can afford an very nice blackpower rifle with the out of the box accuracy to harvest deer. I am relatively satisified with its looks and overall construction, but am very disapointed with the trigger pull. Even with the bad trigger performance that big U.P. buck is in real trouble.
