St. Croix Imperial 9' 5-6 weight 2-pc rod Fishing Rods

Fishing Rods Manufacturer: St. Croix
St. Croix Model: Imperial 9' 5-6 weight 2-pc rod
Review Category: Fishing Rods

Purchase: Fishing Rods I bought my St. Croix Imperial, my first fly rod, at High Country Flies in Jackson, Wyoming, a little more than ten years ago. It came with an aluminum rod case and cost less than $100. The Imperial rods are now running $150.

Things I like about the St. Croix Imperial 9' 5-6 weight 2-pc rod Fishing Rods: These inexpensive St. Croixs are classic fly rods with an easy action. They're forgiving on the beginner, but an expert can still wind up enough line speed for a 70-foot cast. The company supports their product and will replace broken tips at a reasonable price. I think I paid $19 to replace the tip after I slammed it in my car door. The rod is made to handle both 5- and 6-weight lines. Throwing a 5-weight double taper will get you all sorts of distance.

What I don't like about the St. Croix Imperial 9' 5-6 weight 2-pc rod: There's nothing I don't like about my St. Croix. It would be nice to have a stiffer rod for casting bass bugs, but that's not what this rod was made for.

Fishing Rods Imperial 9' 5-6 weight 2-pc rod quality: This rod has seen ten years of hard use, hiking in heavy woods, casting on small, overgrown streams, landing in muddy Southern rivers, and pushing flies out of treetops and off snags. (I left Wyoming not long after I got the rod.) I broke the tip once in the early days, before I was used to maneuvering a 9-foot rod. It's still going strong.

Imperial 9' 5-6 weight 2-pc rod summary: If you're a fly fishing beginner, or if you just want a classic-action, easy-casting fly rod at a great price, I'd recommend the St. Croix Imperials.
