Shimano Symetre 2000 Fishing Reels

Fishing Reels Manufacturer: Shimano
Shimano Model: Symetre 2000
Review Category: Fishing Reels

Purchase: Bought this reel about 5 years ago for about 80 dollars Canadian. I liked the anti-reverse feature the most.

Things I like about the Shimano Symetre 2000: Very smooth even in -20 degree weather. Has a decent rear drag so even 2 and 4 lb mono can be used. Very tight reel with no rattling parts.

What I don't like about the Shimano Symetre 2000: 1. I do not like is the roller pickup on the bail. When the bail is closed and the line gets picked up, it gets hooked on edge of the roller that does not revolve. I guess, if I used larger line, this would not be a problem but when using light mono or the new "micro fiber" lines that are very thin, the problem of the misaligned line is still there. 2. I did not get a spare spool with the reel. Extra spools are expensive. All companies should take heed. 3. Spool capacity is too large. I would prefer a large spool but being able to wind on only 100 yards of 4 lb mono or 125 yards of 6 lb micro fiber. All companies should take heed 4. When the reel is in "anti-reverse" I would like the "anti-reverse" to work only when the bail is closed. When the bail is open after a cast, it's quite awkward to close the bail just by cranking the handle. You have to give the handle a quick sharp twitst to close the bail. I end up closing the bail by pushing on it with my hand. Again...a problem that all similar reels have.

Symetre 2000 quality: On top of a better roller arrangement on the bail, I would prefer the spool to be screwed on instead of being "slipped and latched" on. Pressing the button to release or install the spool may be fast and easy but the slack in the spool on the arbor makes things a bit sloppy. But this problem is apparent in all the spinning reels with "anti-reverse" that I have seen.

Symetre 2000 summary: I don't think I will buy any more Shimano reels because of the line getting caught up with the edge of the roller bearing. I doubt any of my comments will be seen by any of the manufacturers.
