Redington RS2 7/8 Fly Reel Fishing Reels

Fishing Reels Manufacturer: Redington
Redington Model: RS2 7/8 Fly Reel
Review Category: Fishing Reels

Purchase: Fishing Reels Purchased at Galyan's in Frisco, TX for $79.99. It was 50% off the original price of $159.99. It is my primary fly reel for bass, redfish, and speckled trout.

Things I like about the Redington RS2 7/8 Fly Reel Fishing Reels: The drag is solid enough to stop a truck and yet still quite smooth. At 200 yds. (20 lb. dacron with 8 wt. line), the backing capacity is more than enough for me. It is also a large arbor reel, allowing for a much faster retrieve. These were the three main features that led me to purchase the reel, along with the outstanding deal I got on it. The reel also comes with a lifetime original owner waranty, which I have already been able to test out. The reel was supposed to come with an extra clicker, spring, and key tool but mine were missing at purchase. One short phone call to Redington's waranty department and the parts were in my hand 2 days later at no charge. That's solid service!

What I don't like about the Redington RS2 7/8 Fly Reel: This reel feels a bit on the heavy side, but it seems to balance "pretty good but not great" on the 8 wt. rod I use it on. For now I will just have to deal with it until I can afford something better. At 6.9 ounces it still weighs in at 2 ounces less than Redington's more expensive Brakewater series. Probably due in large part to the larger backing capacity of the Brakewater.

Fishing Reels RS2 7/8 Fly Reel quality: The reel and spool are machined from one solid piece of aircraft grade anodized barstock aluminum. It feels very solid in the hand. The disc drag componets are stainless steel with a synthetic disc drag washer. Suprisingly smooth considering that the washer is not cork. The handle on this one is black synthetic with little bumps on the surface. I have also seen smaller models in this series with the more traditional round wooden handle. At first I didn't like the sythetic handle, but I have grown to appreciate the design with the larger fish that this reel is intended for.

RS2 7/8 Fly Reel summary: This is an outstanding reel for it's price range. I am quite pleased with it, inspite of it's weight. It's always nice to find a company that will stand behind their product for the life of it's owner. I have seen these reels quite often on e-bay selling for less than $100.
