Length Matters! Carefully consider the kind of water you'll be fishing when selecting rod and leader lengths. A short rod (6'3" to 8') is appropriate for small, overgrown streams or anywhere your casting space will be limited. Short rods improve accuracy, minimize the overall range of motion, and maximize the amout of line between angler and target. Small water and short rods can be fished most efficiently with shorter leaders. (7'6"). When casting space is less confined, or when fishing a larger body of water, longer rods (8'6" and 9') are most efficient, and will turn over longer leaders (9' or more) that can help keep spooky fish unaware of your presence. The longer your rod, the better it will rollcast (an important technique that eliminates the need for backcasting.) This should be a primary consideration for stillwater and river anglers alike.
