Patent Granted For Invention Of Fishing Lures Made Out Of Fish Food

Fishing Gear - Food Source Lures

Fishing Gear - Today the United States Patent & Trademark Office issued a patent on fishing lures that are made out of fish food. FoodSource Lure Corporation (Birmingham, Alabama) and Auburn University (Auburn, Alabama) jointly own the patent. FoodSource makes and sells the fishing lures under the brand name "FoodSource™ Lures."

'The patent is the culmination of four years of research and development. It confirms and recognizes that FoodSource™ Lures are unique," said Company president, Ed Rogers. "They are made entirely out of edible fish food. As such, they are much more effective at catching fish than soft plastic lures. In addition, because FoodSource™ Lures are real food and not plastic, they are completely biodegradable."

The Auburn University invention team for FoodSource™ Lures was led by Dr. Jean Weese and Dr. Leonard Bell from Auburn's Department of Nutrition and Food Science and Dr. Russell Wright from Auburn's Department of Fisheries & Allied Aquacultures. According to Dr. Weese, FoodSource™ Lures do not contain any polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) plastic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic or any other plastic. "FoodSource™ Lures are 100% biodegradable. No plastic, no polymers, just 100% fish food," said Dr. Weese. Dr. Wright, the invention team's top fish scientist, said that during the development process "we fed FoodSource™ Lures to fish. What we found was that those fish that were fed the product actually grew - they put on weight feeding on the material. Plus, I've caught a lot of fish on it."

The influential fishing publication Bassmaster magazine says FoodSource™ Lures are "more durable than many soft plastics and will last long enough to land several bass." ("Tackle Guide - Alluring New Baits For 2004," Dec. 2003). Leading outdoor magazine Field & Stream says FoodSource™ Lures have the "action and feel of plastic but the irresistible scent of natural bait." ("Buyer's Guide," Dec. 2003). Several other industry publications, including Outdoor Life, Tackle Trade World, and Fishing Tackle Retailer magazine have featured FoodSource™ Lures.

Jeff Cook, the founder and lead guitarist of the band "ALABAMA," and the official "Fishing Ambassador" of the state of Alabama, fishes with FoodSource™ Lures and is a believer. Cook said, "In the simplest of terms, this is a bait no-brainer. This is fish food that really catches fish."

The patent is U.S. Patent No. 6,753,004. As further proof of the uniqueness of FoodSource™ Lures' 100% fish food formula, the USPTO soon will issue a trademark registration to the Company for the term "FOODSOURCE."
