Humminbird®’s New Side Imaging Sonar Takes Consumer Fishfinders to a Brand New Level

Fishing Gear - Hummingbird

Fishing Gear -Continuing to lead the way in innovation, Humminbird® introduces state-of-the-art side imaging technology previously not available to consumers. The 981c SI and 987c SI Combo utilize side scan technology derived from military and commercial products to map the bottom and structure with “picture-like” detail.

Unlike commercial models, Humminbird side imaging sonar installs on the transom, trolling motor or through the hull of the boat. Sonar beams look to each side of the boat reaching out 240 feet in each direction, for 480 feet of bottom coverage in up to 75 feet of depth. Traditional dual frequency down-looking capabilities are built into this same transducer offering depth capability up to 2,500 feet.

“Until now, this type of technology has only been available at very high costs for use in commercial, research and salvage applications,” Humminbird Senior Global Product Manager Darrell Watt said. “Our engineering team has adapted this technology for consumer use and coupled it with all our most popular and high-performance features. The 981c SI and 987c SI Combo provides consumers with the ultimate tool for gaining more knowledge about bottom and structure.”

In saltwater, side imaging is extremely useful in picking up precise detail on popular fishing structure like wrecks, reefs, humps and drop-offs as well as spotting baitballs in open water. For the freshwater angler, side imaging reveals fish attracting structure such as timber, stumps, rocks and creek beds. In each application, the picture-like image helps the angler to better understand the contouring of bottom and orientation of structure for better fishing efficiency.

In addition to fishing, there are other applications that could benefit greatly by utilizing the side imaging capabilities in these innovative Humminbird units. Local fire departments tasked with search and recovery operations would have the advantage of seeing highly detailed images of the bottom. Marina operations can survey the bottom to monitor changing bottom conditions and become more aware of potential hazards. Curious recreational boaters could use this technology for entertainment value.

“We have combined side imaging and all our high-performance dual frequency fishfinder capabilities with a color wide screen format ideally suited for viewing sonar from several sources in split screen mode,” said Watt.

These fully featured and user-friendly models are both part of Humminbird’s fishing system product line, which means they are expandable and upgradeable to accommodate the most current technologies including WeatherSense™ barometric pressure monitor, GPS input, chartplotting and PC compatibility.

Humminbird 981c SI (side imaging fishing system) Innovative and unique side imaging capabilities make the Humminbird 981c SI the most technologically advanced fishing system on the market today. Ultra high resolution sonar beams reach out to 240 feet on each side to reveal up to 480 feet of the bottom with picture-like images. In saltwater, side imaging will be extremely useful in picking up precise detail on popular fishing structure like wrecks, reefs, humps and drop-offs, as well as spotting baitballs in open water. For the freshwater angler, side imaging reveals fish attracting structure such as timber, stumps, rocks and creek beds.

In each application, the picture-like image helps the angler better understand the contouring of the bottom and orientation of the structure for better fishing efficiency.

Combined with dual frequency 2D sonar (50kHz and 200kHz), the 981c SI provides all the capabilities of a traditional fishfinder and extremely high resolution picture-like images of the bottom contour and structure. The ultra wide (7-inch diagonal), high resolution (480 vertical pixels x 854 horizontal pixels), color screen is optimized for split screen viewing of sonar and data from multiple sources. With a triple channel sonar receiver, dual microprocessor and 8000 watts peak to peak (1000 watts RMS) power output, the Humminbird 981c SI is designed for exceptionally high performance. The suggested retail price of the Humminbird 981c SI is $1,749.99.

GPS Features (GPS input required)

• Ability to capture location of structure at any point on the down-looking sonar graph

• Full trackplotting and 3D highway navigation screens

• Precise trolling grids and waypoint targeting to locate and stay on structure

• Capability to save 3,000 waypoints, 50 tracks with 20,000 points each and 50 routes

Humminbird 987c SI Combo (side imaging fishing system, GPS with chartplotter) Add GPS chartplotting to one of the most technologically advanced fishfinders on the market today and you get Humminbird’s 987c SI Combo. The innovative side imaging feature provides “picture-like” detail of bottom surfaces and structure, while 12 channel WAAS GPS accurately tracks your position and displays it on a high resolution chart. Dual frequency sonar (50kHz and 200kHz) provides additional detail and coverage that can be viewed on the ultra wide (7-inch diagonal), high definition (480 vertical pixels x 854 horizontal pixels), color screen. The wide screen provides an ideal format for split screen viewing and display of large digital numbers. The 987c SI Combo includes 12 channel GPS with WAAS and built in UniMap™ (zoom in to four nautical miles) of inland lakes, rivers and coasts in the 48 contiguous United States. With a triple sonar receiver, dual microprocessor and 8000 watts peak to peak (1000 watts RMS) power output, the Humminbird 987c SI Combo is designed for exceptionally high performance. The suggested retail price for the 987c SI Combo is $1,999.99. GPS Features
