GET A GRIP WITH KERSHAW'S NEW BLUR FROM CUSTOM KNIFE MAKER KEN ONION

Release

WILSONVILLE- Kershaw's new Blur, with Speed-Safe assisted opening, has all the features knife user's love in a Ken Onion knife, all the quality they expect from Kershaw, plus a secure, new grip that just won't quit.

It's a fact-most knife injuries occur because of a poor grip on the knife. Kershaw's new Ken Onion Blur solves the problem with a unique handle that features advanced materials to ensure a safe, secure grip every time-even under extreme conditions. And, because it's an "Onion knife" from Kershaw, the new Blur also features incredible, multi-tasking performance, the highest quality materials, and the kind of good looks knife users will be proud to own.

The key to the Blur's "Trac-Tec" grip is its combination of unique handle ergonomics and the "grip tape" inserts on both sides of the handle.

Ken Onion designed the Blur's handle to precisely fit the user's hand, providing a comfortable, secure feel. For lightweight, the handle is built of anodized 6061-T6 aluminum. (Anodizing produces a porous coating that can absorb dyes to produce extremely scratch-resistant, colored surfaces.) The Blur is being produced in two colors, model 1670BLK matte black handle with black inserts and a black blade and model 1670RD a deep, matte burgundy-red with black inserts. Each model is available with partial serrations.

The inserts are vital to the Blur's amazing grip. Kershaw CNC mills each handle to accept these textured, "Trac-Tec" inserts-inserts made of the same material skateboarders use to stay securely on their boards even when executing aerial turns and flips. In the Blur's case, the Trac-Tec tape inserts offer a rough, dry feeling that ensures a solid grip even in the most damp or slippery conditions.

For strength, the Blur's 3 1/2-inch, drop-point blade is hollow ground of 440A stainless blade steel. This grade of steel is strong, features excellent edge-retention properties, and rates a durable 55-57 on the Rockwell Hardness Scale. Folded, the Blur measures 4 1/2 inches and weighs in at a comfortable 4.2oz. For additional safety, the blade is secured within the handle by a sturdy locking liner until ready for use.

The Blur also features Kershaw's famous Speed-Safe assisted-opening system. This proprietary technology enables the knife user to open the Blur with one hand. The user gives a short push on the thumb stud (left or right-handed) and the blade moves into position smoothly and easily. It then locks into place for safe, secure use. The Blur also features a removable or reversible pocket clip.

Model 1670BLK and 1670BLKST retails for $99.95 and the 1670RD and 1670RDST retails for $89.95 Both models are available July 2003.

The new, secure-grip Blur is built to maintain Kershaw's worldwide reputation for quality and innovation. The company prides itself on using the highest quality materials and state-of-the-art techniques to produce knives and other cutting tools that are prized throughout the world.

HOW THE BUMP GOT ITS BUMP Facts About Kershaw's New, Limited Edition Ken Onion Knife and its Dramatic, New Blade Shape

WILSONVILLE- It's got a completely new blade shape-with a curved "bump" just forward of the blade's middle. But since the Bump (Model 1590BL and Model 1590GR) is from Kershaw Knives and Ken Onion, that interesting bump isn't just for show; it has a purpose in performance.

According to custom knife maker Ken Onion, the new Bump-which also features the Speed-Safe assisted-opening mechanism-is designed for multi-tasking, minimal mass, and maximum performance. "I wanted to make the Bump as multi-tasked as possible," says Onion. "The blade design is unique, but at the same time, it's very practical and fluent at a large number of jobs."

In a tougher cutting situation-for example, cutting a half-inch branch-the bumped blade shape provides maximum leverage and cutting ease. For piercing, the blade's point is precisely centered so that the energy is distributed evenly down the handle to offer greater power with less effort.

The four-inch blade is flat ground for strength and built of S30V stainless steel. S30V is made through a metallurgical process that results in extremely uniform molecules; so much so that inclusions or impurities are eliminated or insignificant. The process creates steel that is strong, workable, and has excellent edge-retention properties. It rates a durable 55-57 on the Rockwell Hardness Scale.

But the blade's bump isn't the new knife's only performance-enhancing bump. Kershaw's Bump also features a bump on the handle. The CNC-machined handle includes an anti-rotation bump that keeps the knife from rolling out of the user's hand-even if he's pressing down hard during a cutting task. The four-and-a-half-inch handle fits the hand precisely and is constructed of 6AL4V titanium for lighter-than-steel weight and strength. The 1590BL's handle has a scratch-resistant, anodized, blue finish with gold accent stripes. The 1590GR's handle is green with gold accent stripes. Its textured surface provides comfort and an extra-secure grip. A sturdy frame lock secures the blade within the handle until ready for use. The entire knife weighs in at a comfortable 4.3 oz.

Thanks to Kershaw's Speed-Safe assisted-opening system, the Bump offers maximum flexibility in opening technology as well. The proprietary Speed-Safe technology enables the knife user to open the knife with one hand-left-handed or right-handed. The user gives a short push on the thumb stud and the blade moves into position smoothly and easily. It then locks into place for safe, secure use. Alternately, the user can open the blade with the Index Finger Opening System. By pulling back on the Index Opening knob with the index finger, the Speed-Safe system is engaged and the blade moves into place. When the knife is fully open, the Index Opening knob becomes a finger guard to protect the user's hand.

The Bump is being serial-numbered. It will be available beginning in June of 2003. It comes in a zippered, collector's pouch. Manufacturer's suggested retail price is $275.

The exciting, new Bump is built to maintain Kershaw's worldwide reputation for quality and innovation. The company prides itself on using the highest quality materials and state-of-the-art techniques to produce knives and other cutting tools that are prized throughout the world.

Vari X III

Optics

I bought my new unit over the net at a company named scopes and more. Don't tell my wife, but the scope cost just a little over $700.00.

The lighting is incredible. I took it out to a friends farm the other night coupled with my .270 bdl and we were able to shoot almost until complete darkness.

I miss the view offered by my last scope which was a wide view. I guess the old adage is correct, you've got to give up something to get something.

It's sealed tight and I'll be real surprised if I ever have a problem with this one foggy up like some of mine have in the past.

I'm very happy with the new scope. It's placement is awesome, and the lighting is the best I've experienced in a scope I've owned.

Shakespeare Fishing Rod

Intrepid IM-7 Graphite

Fishing Rods

I laid down $29.99 for the rod and then another $65 for a nice Shimano reel to go with it. That was just as everything was going on sale about this time last year as Fall starts to set in.

I bought the 5 foot 6 inch light action. I didn't want to go with the ultra-light for the fact that every now and then I like to do some Carp fishing on a stream and needed the little extra umppphhh. I like the twist lock reel system as I often change strategies in mid stream, pardon the pun and switch lines. The Shimano reel came with an extra spool which made doing this simple especially with the twist lock real system.

The action of the rod may still be a little light for my taste. A question I will pose for all to read this is what's to say an ultra light in New York is an ultra light in Florida. NY has a lot of small streams with small fish whereas Florida has a lot of bassing lakes. Just something to think about.

It's okay I think the guides may come loose eventually, then again who knows.

It's middle of the road all the way. Certainly not the best and it's not the worst either. Doing a review is tougher than I thought.

Cat Fish Fusion

Fishing Line

8 bucks at K-mart

We river fish a lot for catties and carps. Some of the other brads stretched out in a couple of nights, or worse yet had us losing hooks all the time.

I'm getting some ripples in my line that leave to much slack.

30 lb. test will stand up to anything.

Good line- you can give it a reel good pull and not worry about to many snags. The other night I landed the biggest sucker I've ever seen just after a heavy rain when the river was filled with logs and garbage. If I hadn't had the catfish wire on it never would have come in.

Hunter's View Tree Stand

12' Buddy Stand

Tree Stands

I picked up this unit on sale this weekend at Dunham's for $119.99. The price on this unit ranges depending on where you buy it. I have seen it elsewhere over $150.

I had seen this tree stand and it looked nice to me. My youngest son is now old enough to hunt with us so I wanted something to hold the both of us for his first time out. We put it in a tree on our property just to see how it feels, and it was great.

The only drawback on this is the weight. Being that my youngest son is only 12, I wouldn't want him to have to lug it around. It's about 75lbs or so. It's fine for me and the older boy though.

The unit is made out of a heavy steel, so it is very strong. It says that it will hold up to 500lbs so two adults would even be able to use it. The foot and seat platforms are about 12" by 40" so it is very roomy.

I'll have to re-visit this site later in the season to tell you how we made out, but it looks like we won't be disappointed. If we like it at the end of the season as much as we do now, I may get one for my sons to use together next year.
