Magellan Explorist 100 GPS
Hunting & Fishing Gear Review
The first thing you notice about the Magellan Explorist GPS is its bright orange color almost telling you the Explorist was made tailored to hunting. This pocket sized GPS is very powerful for its size and doesn’t come with the big price tag of many recreational GPS units. The Magellan Explorist is equipped with TrueFix GPS Technology with 14 parallel channels which provide you with fast signal acquisition, minimal signal loss and accuracy.
If you haven’t tried a GPS unit for hunting you should seriously consider one. I use one for locating my tree stand in the dark. If you’re like me you’re very excited when the first day of buck comes around. With all of the commotion at camp and just trying to make sure you have all your hunting gear to survive a day in the woods it is easy to get turned around in the darkness of the woods. Using the Magellan GPS Explorist you simply mark the location of your treestand and whenever you want to return the large backlit display will guide you back to within 9 feet of the location of your stand. That alone hooked me on using a pocket sized GPS unit.
Another great feature for using GPS hunting units is the ability to mark rubs and scrapes you discover on the unit. Once you have the locations plotted on your GPS you can use them to hone in on the core area of the big buck you’ve been tracking.
The Magellan Explorist GPS is simple to use and features a one button design which lets you use the most important features with the touch of a single button. A first time user can easily use the capabilities of the Magellan Explorist.
Three navigation screens allow you to view the distance to your destination, along with the speed you are traveling and the direction you are traveling.
A concern of some hunters when considering buying a GPS hunting unit is activation and subscription fees like some car based systems. With the Magellan Explorist GPS there aren’t any additional fees beyond the cost of the unit itself.
The Explorist is encased in a rubber armored plastic which allows you to take it on all of your hunting trips and know it will withstand drops and falls. It is water resistant and comes with a one year warranty.
The Magellan Explorist 100 sells in the $100 dollar range. I see Bass Pro has a sale on the Explorist as of October 22, 2005 for the price of $89.88.
