New Magellan Street-Routing and Guidance Software Extends Versatility of GPS Handhelds Used for Outdoor Adventures like Hunting, Hiking and Boating

Press Release

The same handheld GPS unit used by a hiker seeking a trailhead in the Grand Canyon or by a boater navigating Lake Michigan will soon provide turn-by-turn, audio-prompted guidance when traveling by foot or by automobile. Thales Navigation will make it possible with the Fall introduction of the Magellan® MapSend® DirectRouteTM software, the first street-routing software designed specifically for recreational GPS handhelds. This major advance in mapping software is easy to use with a wide range of Magellan handheld GPS receivers. Now many Magellan customers who use GPS technology primarily for recreational purposes can gain travel routes to city destinations, street addresses and thousands of points of interest in the continental United States and Canada.

MapSend DirectRoute is sold alone or pre-packaged with a Magellan handheld GPS unit. The software is compatible with most Magellan Meridian® and SporTrak® handhelds, including Meridian Color, Meridian Gold, Meridian Platinum, Meridian Marine, SporTrak Pro, SporTrak Pro Marine and SporTrak Color.

“We conducted extensive research that revealed more than half of our Magellan customers want to use their handheld GPS receivers for occasional street navigation in addition to pedestrian and recreational activities,” said Lonnie Arima, vice president of worldwide consumer sales and marketing for Thales Navigation. “MapSend DirectRoute provides Magellan handheld users with the option of adding improved street navigation functionality while complementing the other advanced functions built into their receiver. The addition of this software enhances versatility of Magellan handhelds like never before, enabling users to access topographic maps, marine charts and street navigation – all on a single Magellan receiver.”

MapSend DirectRoute software is contained on two CD-ROMs. It features a database with more than 35 categories of downloadable points of interest for the United States and Canada, including restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, hotels, parks, airports, tourist attractions and more.

Users have three easy, unique ways to route, either by moving the cursor to a destination on the map screen, by entering an address, or by searching points of interest by name. MapSend DirectRoute calculates the “shortest time” street route, and then provides visual guidance and audible prompts that notify the user of each maneuver. With access to the most current, sophisticated NAVTECH® map data, which is used in leading navigation systems throughout North America and Europe, users can upload any map area they choose, within the limits of the available memory in the receiver or a total of 64 MB on a memory card.

DAIWA UPGRADES LINE COUNTER REELS, ADDS COMPACT WALLEYE SIZE AND NEW ECONOMY MODELS TOO!

Press Release

Daiwa’s line counter reels have been a standard for years on the Great Lakes, where they helped usher in a new era of accuracy in controlled depth fishing. Now the standard SG reels have been upgraded with two stainless steel ball bearings, a gold anodized, forged aluminum spool and a rugged new aluminum handle.

Built specifically for the walleye fisherman is a compact new SG17LCA model. Smaller in size, it also features the dual paddle handle preferred by most walleye anglers. “While the 27 sized reels are extremely versatile for most Great Lakes trolling, we have had numerous requests by walleye anglers for an even more compact model. And here it is, the SG17LCA”, commented Daiwa’s Bill Liston. “It’s a perfect size for the walleye trolling techniques used today.” MSRP for the SG reels runs from $84.95 to $94.95.

Also new is an economy-priced series of Accudepth line counter reels that also include the new 17 size. MSRP for the Accudepth reels runs from $59.95 to $74.95.

Auto Recoil Multi-Tool Knife

This was a gift from My Girlfriend's Brother Marc for Christmas. He didn't know what to buy me, but knew I loved the outdoors so he thought this would be a good gift. He's a lot like me and shops at the very last second.

This is something I would never buy myself, but always wanted. I see them at differnt places on the net for around $60.00. What an awesome tool, everything is right there. I only get a few days to hunt a year and certainly can't waste anytime with not having a tool on me, or in the car. This jewel does it all. From opening the occasional after hunt beer to tightening up my gun in the field. I travel 2 hours from the house to hunt and rarely if ever have tools with me. This is the solution.

It won't handle everything that comes along and some jobs are meant for real honest to goodness tools.

It appears to me Gerber makes a great product capable of withstanding a lot of punishment. I also like the fact it's stainless steel which will stand up to the occasional harsh conditions of a hunting or fishing trip.

I'm very pleased with my gift. It's something that will help me keep my sanity when things go wrong in the field, or boat. Providing you don't lose it you'll have it for year to come.

I blew close to 99 bucks on it. There wasn't much of a decision since my viken ex-step daughter's boyfriend helped himself to my ot'6 BDL and of course the attached Leoupold 3x9. Now I'm using an Old Mossburg with a poly choke and two shot clip.

Not a lot, it's dim compared to my old scope and doesn't offer the field of view. The ad says allows more light in and I am thinking allows more light in than what a bucket. It was cheap which is about the only good thing to say about the scope other than it was made cheap by whatever country made it over ther.

It's dark and I can't seem to hit the same place twice in one day. I'd reckon the bullet makers made this scope just to make money off the dumb clucks who buy it and try to site it in.

Put a lead pipe on your gun barrel and it might feel better. Better yet through it at the dam turkey or dear and you might have a better chance.

Yeah I might have bought a bad one who knows. I won't risk it again and once I get my settlement I'll be throwing this cluck out the window of my truck.

Hawk Climbing Tree Stand

Tree Stands

It came yesterday from Wal-Mart.com. I don't recall exactly what it cost since I bought a new safety harness and a few lures, Somewhere close to $99.00.

I had a real old loggy without a seat on it. I purchased a strap on seat, but I'm tall and it didn't give me the best support especially when bundled up for one of the colder days of the year. For this one the seat is part of the unit and pretty comfortable compared to others I've tried. The straps are generous in size as well compared to my old loggy whose straps were nothing more than carrying handles.

It's not completly camo'd. The base is a gray that will probably blend in well enough, but I would rather not take any chances. It's to late to paint it and not have to worry about scent so I will probably buy a couple of rolls of camo tape and then spray it down with scent shield real well in addition to leaving it under the shed.

For $100 I didn't expect miracles, but it's pretty solid. I go a little over the weight limit of 300 with a full pack of gear, gun and knapsack so I'm alway think about that in the back of my mind. I also wish it were a little quieter when climbing, but I'm sure after a little use it will work out.

For $100 some dollars I think I did well. I don't have to worry a lot about losing it like I would with a high end stand and it is very comfortable, especially with the padded armrest in the warmer months. I'll give it a three out of five.

Game Cam 2 Game Camera

Trail Cameras

I was about to buy one of the real good game cameras when I spotted this in a Wal-mart ad. I decided why buy one of them when I can buy four of these and cover many of the hot spots on the farm I hunt. I saw them online at Wal-Mart for $98.00 just the other day.

It has an infrared device triggered by heat that allows it to take pictures at night. The best part about that is it puts the time on the picture so if old boy is visiting the scrape before day light I won't waste my time on him. Hopefully one of the other cameras will catch him at a scraped during daylight hours. There is also an adjustable delay time between pictures which I have set for it's fastest setting.

Their not the clearest pictures in the world, but they definitely get their point across. I was chewing up film like mad and am now buying the cheapest I can get and the pictures aren't much different at all.

I think it's sealed pretty well and with the rain we recently had in Kansas none of the moisture got in. The housing or cage is made out of indestructible plastic so that's one less thing to worry about.

I feel like I got three for the price of one. You wouldn't believe some of the pictures I've got. The best thing about them is I belong to a Sportsman's lodge and now when I tell my stories I can just reach in my pocket and show anyone who doesn't believe.
