This "Look-It-Up" Refrence Book Puts The Outdoors At The Tips of Your FingersThe Outdoors and Sports Directory lists more than 110,000 companies and businesses that sell goods or services in more than 20 outdoors and sports categories. It appears to be an idea whose time has come, especially since it's backed up with a Web site that is updated daily. The Directory, published in January by a New York company, offers information about companies specializing in sports such as archery, fishing, hunting, shooting, biking, camping, climbing, horseback riding, golf, motor sports, skiing and other snow sports, tennis and racquetball, travel, fitness and weight training. The listings, which are organized by category and state, include business names and telephone numbers. Not surprisingly, Michigan's listing of equipment companies, guides, outfitters and game farms is among the most extensive in the country. The listings include several Flint-area companies and enterprises, such as Farmland Pheasants, Mitchell Farms Hunt Club, Williams Gun Sight & Outfitters, Holmes Pheasants Farm Inc., Hunter's Creek Club and The Huntsman Hunt Club Inc. There also is information about international businesses, including three pages of African safari outfitters. Hunting, for instance, has information about accessories, agents, outfitters and guides, associations, books and videos, clothing, decoys, dog breeders, ear and eye protection, electronics, first aid, game farms, game calls, knives, optics and photography, scents and lures, stands and blinds, taxidermy, trappers, schools and camps, and catalogs. Publisher Vito F. Cardinale said he and his company spent three years gathering information for The Outdoors Sports Directory, which will be updated every two or three years. Cardinale, who is an avid hunter and outdoorsman himself, said he got the idea for the directory while attending Safari Club Banquets and bidding on guided hunting trips. He said he found it difficult to do much research about the outfitters and their countries before the auctions. The Directory features dozens of advertisements by outdoor-related companies interested in researching dedicated outdoor enthusiasts looking for the best connections. The Directory also contains amps and information about parks and wildlife refuges around the country. The book sells for $29.95 and can be ordered by calling toll-free (888) 386-8600.
