Hunting Scopes - Two New Reticles from Leupold Put Long-Range Shooting Accuracy at Hunters’ Fingertips

Hunting Scopes - Press Release

Hunting scopes – Available in select VX®-III riflescope models, Leupold’s new Boone and Crockett™ Big Game and Varmint Hunter’s Ballistic Aiming Systems can be easily adjusted to work with a particular cartridge by changing the magnification for more precise shooting capability at extended ranges.

“Our Big Game Ballistic Aiming System was developed in cooperation with the Boone and Crockett Club and is the first reticle to bear the club’s name,” noted Mike Slack, Leupold’s marketing communications manager. Each reticle system has a series of aiming points to help the hunter shoot accurately at long range. The first aiming point is designed for use at 200 yards with most common cartridges. Each system offers two different power selector positions signified by small and large triangles located within the magnification level indicators on the hunting scope. With this choice of positions, the hunter can select the subtension (the reticle’s size in relation to the image size) best suited to the cartridge being used.

Aiming points on the Boone and Crockett Big Game reticle are patterned after Leupold’s CPC reticle, with tapered marks that draw the eye to each 100-yard increment aiming center as that particular aiming point is used. An example of ranging with this reticle system: The hunter brackets a game animal with a brisket height of 18 inches between the center aiming point and the top picket, turns the power selector ring on the hunting scope until the brisket fills the space beween these two points, then reads the range on the power selector ring.

The fine-lined aiming points on the Varmint Hunter’s reticle are designed so as not to obscure small animals at long ranges using the hunting scope. A simple ranging system is also provided. When the power selector ring is set on the large triangle, the 2.33 MOA opening from the bar on the bottom post to the 500-yard line brackets a prairie dog at 300 yards. If the prairie dog is smaller than this opening, it is further than 300 yards away.

Two New Reticles from Leupold hunting scopes Put Long-Range Shooting Accuracy at Hunters’ Fingertips With either of Leupold’s new Ballistic Aiming Systems, the lower power (small triangle) and higher power (large triangle) marks always represent the elevation needed at easy-to-remember range increments rounded to 50 or 100 yards.

The ends of the aiming point lines represent typical 10-miles-per-hour wind deflection while square points further out represent 20-miles-per-hour wind deflection. “Setting up either of our new Ballistic Aiming Systems is simple and requires no chart reading or calculations for use in the field after a reasonable amount of practice,” Slack said. “For hunters who know their own ballistics and put in the practice time needed for effective long-distance shooting with their hunting scope, incredible accuracy is literally at their fingertips with these innovative reticles.”

The VX-III 4.5-14x40mm Long Range and 4.5-14x50mm Long Range hunting scope models offer both the Boone and Crockett Big Game and Varmint Hunter’s Ballistic Aiming Systems as options. The Varmint Hunter’s reticle is also an option on the VX-III 6.5-20x40mm Long Range, 6.5-20x50mm Long Range Target and 8.5-25x50mm Long Range Target models.

The Boone and Crockett Big Game reticle is also an option on the VX-III 2.5-8x36mm, 3.5-10x40mm, 3.5-10x50mm and 4.5-14x40mm hunting scope models.

As with all Leupold Golden Ring® hunting scopes, the VX-III models are made in the U.S.A. and backed by Leupold’s Full Lifetime Guarantee.
