About three years ago Royce Drye, a professional walleye angler from Spokane, Washington was fishing a tournament on Lake of the Woods in Minnesota. During the tournament, he was fishing an area known as the ”Reef.” The Reef is very rocky and anglers leave plenty of gear in the rocks. Royce remembered that he had a couple of Slinky Weights in his glove box and he knew that steelhead anglers used these weights to drift rocky structure without hanging up. Since Royce remembered that the most popular fly in the Northwest for catching trout is the egg-sucking leech, Royce affixed a Mack’s Lure Gloâ Hook to a sliding Slinky Weight and the Slitherâ Rig was born.
